This is our favorite time of the year. Trees are lit up with colorful lights and decorated with pretty ornaments. Beautiful Holiday tunes are playing on the radio. Of course, we celebrate the holidays with so many yummy treats. Here are some tips on snacking healthy during the holidays:
- Eat any sweets either with your meal or shortly after (and only in moderation :) ). Saliva production increases during meals and saliva works to both neutralize pH and clean your mouth. It helps to balance out any acids produced by oral bacteria and rinse away food.
- Avoid sticky and starchy food. Sticky food like dried fruits and candy bars stay on the teeth longer than other foods; make sure you rinse and brush carefully after eating these foods. Starchy treats like cookies and cakes tend to get trapped between our teeth; make sure you floss extra diligently to remove the plaques.
- Watch out for hard candies. While tasty, hard candies are loaded with sugar. The cavity-causing bacteria in our mouth also love them! These bacteria multiply and put our teeth at risk for cavities. Hard candies also tend to crack and chip teeth.
- Healthy choices include lean protein, whole grains and low-fat or fat free diary goods. They are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals that are essential for the health of our teeth and overall health.
